Every big model launch brings the same question: do I need to pay now? With GPT-6 the answer is more interesting than usual, because Free and Go users also see the new experience, but not the same model underneath. This guide uses OpenAI's release notes, Help Center and pricing page, checked on October 17, 2026, to show what each plan really gets.

GPT-6 comes with what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. ChatGPT can now mix text, visuals and interactive elements in one answer: side-by-side comparisons, diagrams, or small tools such as calculators and bill splitters that work inside the chat. It picks the format itself and still answers in plain text when that is clearer. GPT-6 can also start answering while it is still thinking or using tools, then add more findings without another prompt.
In the model menu, GPT-6 replaces the old "Latest" option, and older selectable models are not being retired. Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota. If you prefer plainer answers, ChatGPT on the web has a Layout and visuals setting you can turn off.

*Unlimited everyday text chats, subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails. Separate limits apply to uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools. Go's price varies by country; OpenAI bills in US dollars, with local-currency billing in a limited set of countries.
The model row is the one that matters. OpenAI's Help Center says Free and Go do not include Sol; their Think option runs on Luna. Plus gets GPT-6 Sol at Instant, Medium and High thinking. The two highest settings, Extra High and Pro, are reserved for Pro and the business plans. Plus also includes GPT-6 Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI's tools for longer tasks and coding.
Which Plan Should You Pay For?
- Stay on Free if you mostly ask everyday questions. Text chats are unlimited, and you now get the new answer layouts too.
- Choose Go if you want more uploads, images and voice at a low price and do not need the stronger model. OpenAI says Go may include ads.
- Choose Plus if you write, study, code or analyse long documents. GPT-6 Sol with Medium and High thinking is the real upgrade, along with expanded deep research, ChatGPT Work on web and mobile, and more Codex usage.
- Look at Pro only for heavy professional use. There are now three tiers. Pro 500 costs $500 a month, and Pro 200 is open again at $200 with changed allowances. OpenAI emails affected subscribers, and reports put the change for existing Pro 200 subscribers after October 29. Our guide to the $100 Pro tier covers the entry Pro option.
Two billing facts help with the decision. Plus has no annual plan, so you pay $20 a month and can stop any month. And you can switch from Plus to Go: your current plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then the Go price applies, with no refund for the switch.
Three Checks Before You Upgrade
- Decide where you subscribe. A subscription is managed by the platform you buy it on: chatgpt.com, Apple's App Store or Google Play. OpenAI warns that subscribing again on a second platform without cancelling the first can leave you paying twice.
- Know the currency. OpenAI bills in US dollars, with local-currency billing only in a limited set of countries, and some countries add VAT or GST on top. Your bank converts the rest at its own rate.
- Plan for renewal day. Plus renews on the same date every month. A card that works today but blocks recurring foreign charges will fail next month, not now.
Paying for Plus From Outside the US
OpenAI's pricing page says Go, Plus and Pro can be bought with any major credit card. In practice, that is where many people outside the US get stuck: a local card that blocks recurring dollar charges, a bank that asks for an approval the checkout never shows, or a renewal that fails a month later. If that happens, our guides to a ChatGPT payment that was not approved and a failed Plus renewal walk through the fixes.
If your card keeps failing, SiraPay is built for exactly this. It is a privacy-first virtual card with no forced KYC: no ID upload and no face scan to open an account. There is a dedicated ChatGPT card on its own BIN, built for ChatGPT billing, and the code ChatGPT1 takes 60% off it for new users. Every new account gets a $2 welcome bonus, and the tasks to unlock it are shown in the app. The card's exact price is shown in the app before you pay. Check the app
Because the card holds only what you load, you can keep $20 plus any local tax on it and see before each renewal whether it will go through. The same account works at 150M+ merchants and is used by people in 100+ countries. See our page on virtual cards for ChatGPT and AI tools for the full setup. One honest caveat: OpenAI and its payment processor decide which cards they accept, so no card can promise approval.
Quick Answers
Is GPT-6 free?
Free and Go users get the new GPT-6 experience with Intelligent UI, but on the lighter Luna model. GPT-6 Sol, the stronger model, starts with Plus.
Does ChatGPT Go include GPT-6 Sol?
No. OpenAI says Go does not include Sol; its Think option uses Luna.
How much is ChatGPT Plus now?
$20 a month, billed monthly. OpenAI does not offer an annual Plus plan.
Can I turn off the new visual answers?
On the web, turn off Layout and visuals in Settings. Some visual elements may still appear.
Why don't I see GPT-6 yet?
It is rolling out gradually. If it is missing from the model menu, it may not have reached your account yet.
Final Thoughts
GPT-6 makes the free tiers look better than ever, but the model gap is now very clear: Luna on Free and Go, Sol on Plus. If ChatGPT is part of your work or study, Plus is where GPT-6 really shows up. Just make sure the card behind it is one that will still work on renewal day.
