A first payment that fails is annoying. A renewal that fails is worse, because it happens quietly: the card that worked last month is declined this month, and you find out when the paid features are gone in the middle of your work. The good news is that a failed renewal is nearly always fixable in a few minutes, if you do the steps in the right order.
This guide is built on OpenAI's own Help Center articles, checked on October 12, 2026. It covers what a failed renewal means, how to find out who actually bills you, how to change the card on the web, iPhone and Android, the double-charge trap to avoid, and how to make sure next month's renewal goes through.

OpenAI says renewal payments "may occasionally fail due to security measures or issues with the payment method itself". Its help article does not publish a grace period or say how many times it retries, and users report different results: some still see Plus for a while, others are moved to Free. So treat the day of the failure as your deadline and fix it the same day.
Two billing rules are worth knowing. A monthly ChatGPT subscription is billed on the date you subscribed, every month, and OpenAI does not change invoice dates. And an unpaid invoice stays open on the account: it can block you from removing a card until the invoice is paid or the payment method is updated.
Check the card
Confirm the expiry date, that international and recurring payments are on, and that the balance covers the plan plus tax.
Same date every month
OpenAI bills on the date you subscribed. If you joined on the 12th, it charges on the 12th.
Fix, then retry once
Find the cause, add a working card, set it as default and pay the open invoice. Do not start a second subscription.
First, Find Out Who Bills You
Your subscription is managed by the platform where you bought it. If you subscribed inside the iPhone app, Apple bills you, and changing a card on chatgpt.com does nothing. Check all three places before you touch anything.
| Where you subscribed | Where to look | Where to change the card |
|---|---|---|
| chatgpt.com (web) | Settings, then Billing (or Account, then Payment, then Manage) | Change the card inside ChatGPT's billing settings. |
| iPhone or iPad | Settings app, your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT | Change the payment method on your Apple Account. |
| Android | Google Play Store, Menu, Subscriptions, ChatGPT | Change the payment method on your Google Play account. |
How to Change the Card on chatgpt.com
The order matters here. OpenAI's advice is to add a replacement payment method before removing the old one, so paid services are not interrupted.
- Open ChatGPT on the web and go to Settings, then Billing. On some accounts it is Settings, then Account, then Manage under Payment, which opens a billing portal.
- Add the new card first. Do not remove the old one yet.
- Open the new card's menu and choose Set as default.
- If there is an unpaid invoice, pay it from the billing settings with the new card.
- Now remove the old card from its menu (•••), or with the × beside it in the billing portal.
Two snags come up often. If a card is marked Default, its menu may show only Edit and no Remove option. That is normal: make the new card the default and the old one becomes removable. And removing a card does not cancel your subscription or erase past invoices. It only takes the card off the account.
iPhone and Android: Change It in the Store
If Apple or Google bills your subscription, ChatGPT's own billing settings do not change the store payment method. On an iPhone, open the Settings app, tap your name and update the payment method on your Apple Account. On Android, open the Google Play Store, make sure you are signed in to the Google account you subscribed with, and update the payment method there. From that point the store, not ChatGPT, handles the payment.
The Double-Charge Trap
This is the mistake that costs real money. OpenAI warns that when an Apple renewal fails, the subscription is not cancelled automatically. It can look inactive inside ChatGPT while Apple keeps trying to recover it. If you then start a fresh subscription on chatgpt.com and later update your Apple payment method, Apple can renew the old one, and you are paying for two.
OpenAI gives two safe ways out. Either update the Apple payment method and let Apple recover the subscription, without subscribing anywhere else. Or cancel the Apple subscription first, even if it looks inactive, wait for Apple to confirm it will not renew, and then subscribe on chatgpt.com. Uninstalling the app does not cancel anything.
Why the Renewal Failed in the First Place
| Cause OpenAI lists | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your bank blocked it or the balance was short | Ask your bank whether it stopped the charge for security, and check the funds on the card. |
| Card details are out of date | Check the card number, expiry date and billing address. A reissued card has a new expiry and CVV. |
| Country or region | OpenAI says both you and your card issuer must be in a supported country. |
| Browser data | Clear the browser's cache and cookies, then try the payment again. |
In practice a renewal fails for a reason a first payment does not: something changed since last month. The card expired or was reissued, the bank switched off international or recurring payments, a spending limit was reached, or local tax pushed the amount above the balance. If you see a specific error message, our guide to a ChatGPT payment that was not approved decodes each one.
A Card That Is Ready on Renewal Day
The simplest way to stop repeat failures is to give ChatGPT a card that does nothing else. SiraPay is a privacy-first virtual card with no forced KYC: no ID upload and no face scan to open an account. It has a dedicated ChatGPT card on its own BIN, built for ChatGPT billing, and the code ChatGPT1 takes 60% off that card for new users. The card's exact price is shown in the app before you pay. Check the app
- Sign up on SiraPay and complete the privacy-first onboarding
- Fund your account with crypto (such as USDT) or a supported top-up method
- Create the dedicated ChatGPT card and load one month plus a small buffer
- Add it in ChatGPT's billing settings, set it as default, then remove the old card
Because the card holds only what you load, you always know whether it can cover the next renewal, and nothing else can use up the balance. Top it up a few days before your billing date, and freeze it in a month you want to pause. Our page on virtual cards for ChatGPT and AI tools explains the setup, and the guide to virtual cards for ChatGPT and Netflix covers the rest of your subscriptions.
Two honest caveats. OpenAI and its payment processor decide which cards they accept, so no card can promise approval. And SiraPay is a spend-only card: it pays for your tools, it does not receive money.
If You Would Rather Cancel
Cancelling is also managed where you subscribed. OpenAI advises cancelling at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge, and says paid features stay available until the end of the current billing period. Cancelling stops future renewals. It does not refund earlier charges.
Quick Answers
How do I change my card on ChatGPT?
On the web, go to Settings, then Billing, add the new card, set it as default, then remove the old one. If Apple or Google bills you, change the card in that store instead.
Why can't I remove my card from ChatGPT?
It is probably the default card, or there is an unpaid invoice. Add another card and set it as default, or pay the invoice, then try again.
Will I lose Plus if my renewal fails?
You can. OpenAI does not publish a grace period, so fix the payment the same day.
Can I change my ChatGPT billing date?
No. Billing recurs on the date you subscribed, and OpenAI does not change invoice dates.
Why was I charged twice for ChatGPT?
Usually because two subscriptions are active on different platforms, for example one through Apple and one on chatgpt.com.
Final Thoughts
A failed renewal is a card problem, not an account problem. Find out who bills you, add the new card before removing the old one, pay the open invoice, and never start a second subscription to get around the first. Then put ChatGPT on a card that is funded and ready before each billing date, and the problem does not come back.
