If you use ChatGPT for free in Lahore, Lagos, Dhaka, Johannesburg or Bogotรก, you may soon see something new under some answers: a small, labelled ad. In its announcement on October 21, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads now run in 89 countries and that more than 100,000 advertisers have used the platform since ads launched a little over eight months ago.
This guide explains where ads appear, which plans have them, what advertisers can and can't see, the controls you have, and how to go ad-free if you prefer.

OpenAI named 14 more Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, after earlier launches in Mexico and Brazil. It also named Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan among new markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The company did not publish the full list of all 26 new countries in the announcement.

Which Plans Show Ads
According to OpenAI's help page on ads in ChatGPT, ads may appear on the Free and Go plans only. OpenAI also says it does not show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18, and Temporary Chats never show ads.
| Plan | Ads? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes | Ads may appear below answers. |
| Go | Yes | The low-cost plan still shows ads. |
| Plus | No | Ad-free. |
| Pro | No | Ad-free. |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | No | Ad-free. |
Ads show up as one ad unit below a ChatGPT response, and OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad format during image generation. OpenAI says ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics, and that it does not currently allow political advertising.
What Advertisers Can and Can't See
OpenAI says it does not share your conversations with advertisers and never sells your data to them. Advertisers get aggregated numbers such as views and clicks, not your chats, memories, name, email, precise location or IP address. Ads also don't change ChatGPT's answers: they run on separate systems and are labelled.
What can shape the ad you see is the topic of your current chat, your general location and language, and, if ad personalization is on, signals from past chats and memory. OpenAI notes that personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
Can You Ask ChatGPT About an Ad?
Yes, but only if you choose to. By default, ChatGPT can't see the ads shown to you. If an ad interests you, open its more options menu (โขโขโข) and select Ask ChatGPT. That shares the ad with ChatGPT so you can ask questions, compare it with alternatives or check whether it fits what you need. OpenAI says advertisers don't influence ChatGPT's answers about ads you share this way. Hiding, reporting or clicking an ad also doesn't get added to your ChatGPT memory.
If You Run a Business in One of the New Markets
The same launch opens a new channel for local businesses. OpenAI says advertisers in the new countries can buy ChatGPT Ads through technology partners or self-serve through its Ads Manager, and that its next steps include more ad formats, objectives, buying options and measurement. Ads are matched to what someone is discussing, such as planning, comparing or deciding what to buy, rather than shown at random. Sensitive categories like health and financial services face strict eligibility rules, and political ads are not allowed. If you sell to customers in Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh, it is worth watching how these placements perform for brands in your sector.
Five Ways to Control or Avoid ChatGPT Ads

- Turn off ad personalization. Go to Settings > Ad Controls. You will still see ads based on the current chat, but not on your other chats or history.
- Dismiss ads and see why you got them. The same controls let you hide an ad, give feedback and see why it was shown.
- Clear your ads data. OpenAI says deleted ads data stops being used and is removed within 30 days.
- Use Temporary Chat. Temporary Chats don't show ads and don't use or update memory.
- Choose an ad-free option. Upgrade to Plus or Pro, or, where it's offered, pick OpenAI's free no-ads option, which comes with fewer messages per day and no access to tools like images.
Is Plus Worth It Just to Remove Ads?
Probably not on its own. Plus lists at $20 a month in the US, and its real value is the stronger model and higher limits: since October 7, Plus uses GPT-6 Sol while Free and Go use the lighter Luna, as explained in our comparison of Free, Go and Plus after GPT-6. If you already rely on ChatGPT for work or study, losing ads is a bonus on top. If you use it lightly, the ad controls and Temporary Chat may be enough.
Paying for an Ad-Free Plan From the New Ad Markets
The irony is that many of the new ad markets are the same places where paying for Plus is hardest. Local cards in Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh are often blocked for international payments or hit limits. Our guides to ChatGPT payments failing in Pakistan and paying for ChatGPT Plus in Nigeria cover the local fixes to try first.
If your cards still fail, SiraPay is a privacy-first virtual card built for this. You can create a card without a forced KYC process, with no ID upload and no face scan, and it runs as a standard Visa accepted at 150M+ merchants worldwide. People already use it in 100+ countries. For ChatGPT there is a dedicated ChatGPT card, and code ChatGPT1 gives 60% off that card. Every new account also gets a $2 welcome bonus, and the tasks to unlock it are shown in the app. For the current card price, Check the app
Two honest caveats: no card can guarantee approval, since OpenAI and its payment processor make the final call, and SiraPay is spend-only, so it pays for subscriptions but doesn't receive money.
Quick Answers
Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?
No. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads.
Does ChatGPT Go have ads?
Yes. Ads may appear on both the Free and Go plans in countries where ads are live.
Can advertisers read my ChatGPT chats?
No. OpenAI says advertisers only receive aggregated results like views and clicks, never your chats, memories or personal details.
Can I turn ads off without paying?
Not fully on Free or Go, but Temporary Chats show no ads, and where available, OpenAI offers a free no-ads option with fewer messages and no image tools.
Final Thoughts
Ads in ChatGPT are now part of the free experience in most of the world, including Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh. They are labelled, they stay out of sensitive topics, and you have real controls. If you want them gone entirely, an ad-free plan is the way, and the main hurdle in these markets is usually the payment, not the decision.
