You paid for Plus, your bank shows the money gone, and ChatGPT still says Free. It feels like the worst kind of payment problem, because the money left and nothing arrived. In practice it is usually one of a handful of mix-ups between your bank, the platform that billed you and the account you're signed in to, and each one has a clear fix.
This guide starts with the most important check, whether you were really charged, then covers the five common causes, the fix in order, what to do about double charges, and how refunds work. Everything here comes from OpenAI's own help center unless we say otherwise.

Get Your Virtual Card →First: Were You Actually Charged?
If checkout showed an error and your bank app still shows the amount, look at whether it is pending or posted. A pending amount after a failed checkout is usually an authorization hold. Stripe, which processes ChatGPT payments, explains in its documentation on declines that when it blocks a risky payment it can get an initial authorization from your bank without charging the card. In its guide to authorization holds, Stripe says a released hold never becomes a charge, and that only the bank or the business can release it, not you.
How long a hold takes to drop off depends on your bank, often a few days. Until then, don't keep retrying: each new attempt can create another hold. If the amount has posted and you have an invoice from OpenAI, Apple or Google, the payment went through and the problem is on the account side.
Five Reasons You Paid but Still See Free
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A pending hold from a failed attempt | Your bank shows the amount as pending, and ChatGPT showed an error at checkout | Don't pay again. The bank releases a hold that never becomes a charge. |
| You're signed in to a different ChatGPT account | Plus works on another device, or you have more than one login (Google, Apple, email) | Check the account email on the device where Plus works, then sign in with that account. |
| You bought it in the iPhone or Android app | The receipt came from Apple or Google, not OpenAI | Use Restore purchases on iPhone, and sign in to the account that made the purchase. |
| The app hasn't refreshed | Settings shows Plus but the chat screen still offers an upgrade | Sign out and back in, or try another browser or device. |
| A renewal failed and the plan lapsed | You paid before, then got a billing email about a failed payment | Follow the payment recovery steps in OpenAI's email or update the card. |
The wrong-account case is the most common once a payment has really gone through. OpenAI notes that the email where you receive receipts may be different from your ChatGPT account email, so the receipt alone doesn't tell you which account has Plus. App purchases add one more layer: according to OpenAI, a subscription bought on iPhone or Android is tied to both your Apple ID or Google Play account and the ChatGPT account you were signed in to at the time. If you see a message that the subscription is associated with another account, sign in to that original account. Reinstalling the app won't change the link.
The Fix, Step by Step
- Check your bank app: pending or posted? A pending amount after an error at checkout is usually a hold, not a charge. A posted charge with an OpenAI invoice is a real payment.
- Find the invoice. Search your email for an OpenAI, Apple or Google receipt. The sender tells you which platform billed you.
- Confirm the account. On any device where Plus works, open Settings > Account and note the email. OpenAI says the email that gets receipts may differ from the ChatGPT account email.
- Sign out and sign back in with that account. Use the same sign-in method as before. Signing in with Google instead of email, or the other way round, can open a different account.
- On iPhone, use Restore purchases. It sits under Settings > Account in the ChatGPT app and links the purchase back to your account.
- Don't buy again on another account. Subscriptions can't be transferred between accounts, and a second purchase means a second charge.
- Still Free after a day? Contact support. Use the chat on help.openai.com while signed in to the account that was charged, and include the invoice, date, amount and the last four digits of the card.
If Plus disappeared after it had been working, a failed renewal is the likelier cause, and our guide to fixing a failed Plus renewal and changing your card walks through it. If checkout never went through at all and showed an error, see our guide to the "payment was not approved" error.
Charged Twice? Find Out Who Bills You
Paying again on a different account, or on another platform, is how one problem becomes two charges. OpenAI's guide to duplicate charges says each subscription is managed where you bought it: Apple, Google Play or chatgpt.com. Check all three: on iPhone under Settings, your name, Subscriptions; on Android in Google Play under Menu, Subscriptions; and on the web under Settings, Account. Keep one and cancel the others where they were bought. Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel anything.
One trap is worth knowing. If an Apple renewal fails, Apple doesn't cancel the subscription; it keeps trying to recover it. If you then subscribe on the web and later update your Apple payment method, Apple can renew the old subscription too. Cancel the Apple one first if you're moving to the web. OpenAI also points out that subscriptions can't be transferred between accounts, so cancel on the old account before buying on a new one.
How Refunds Work
OpenAI's refund policy says payments are generally non-refundable, but it may approve refunds for a verified billing error, an unauthorized charge or a documented service or access failure. For an unused individual subscription, a discretionary refund may be possible if you ask within seven days of the charge. A few practical points from the same page:
- For web and Google Play purchases, request the refund through the chat on help.openai.com while signed in to the account that was charged.
- For Apple purchases, ask Apple directly.
- Approved web refunds are processed within 5 to 7 business days, and Google Play ones within 10, before your bank adds its own time.
- Residents of the EU, UK and Turkey can get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.
- OpenAI can't issue a separate refund while a payment dispute with your bank is open, so decide on one route.
Keep ChatGPT Billing Easy to Track
Much of this confusion starts with not knowing which card, account and platform a charge belongs to. A card used only for ChatGPT makes that obvious: every transaction on it is a ChatGPT payment, so a pending hold or a second charge stands out right away.
SiraPay is a privacy-first virtual card you can use that way. You can create a card without a forced KYC process, with no ID upload and no face scan, and it runs as a standard Visa accepted at 150M+ merchants worldwide, with people using it in 100+ countries. For ChatGPT there is a dedicated ChatGPT card on its own BIN, and code ChatGPT1 gives 60% off that card. Every new account also gets a $2 welcome bonus, and the tasks to unlock it are shown in the app. For the current card price, Check the app
- Sign up on SiraPay and complete the privacy-first onboarding
- Fund your account with crypto or a supported top-up
- Create the dedicated ChatGPT card
- Add it on chatgpt.com's billing page while signed in to the account you'll keep
To be clear about the limits: a new card won't fix a wrong-account or app store problem, so sort that out first. No card can guarantee approval, because OpenAI and its payment processor make the final call. And SiraPay is a spend-only card, not a way to receive money. Our fees and limits page lists the rest.
Quick Answers
Why does ChatGPT still say Free after I paid?
Usually because the payment is a pending hold from a failed attempt, or because Plus is on a different ChatGPT account than the one you're signed in to.
How long does a pending ChatGPT charge take to disappear?
It depends on your bank, often a few days. Only the bank or the business can release a hold, so ask your bank if it stays longer.
Can I move Plus to my other account?
No. OpenAI doesn't transfer subscriptions between accounts. Cancel on the old account and subscribe on the new one.
Will reinstalling the app bring Plus back?
No. On iPhone, use Restore purchases while signed in to the account that made the purchase.
Final Thoughts
Paying for Plus and still seeing Free is stressful, but it is rarely lost money. Check whether the amount is pending or posted, find out which platform billed you, and sign in with the account that made the purchase. Don't pay twice, and if a real charge still shows Free after a day, go to OpenAI support with the invoice in hand.
