For two years, paying for ChatGPT from Nigeria meant fighting the dollar shortage. In July 2024 some banks cut international spending on naira cards to as little as $20, and several fintech dollar cards were withdrawn. In 2026 the picture is very different: limits have climbed back up and ChatGPT shows Nigerian users a price in naira.
This guide is built around the $20 Plus plan: what it costs with VAT, which naira cards can pay for it today, why the checkout still says "payment not approved", and what to use when your bank card won't cooperate. Prices and limits below are the latest reported figures, so confirm them at your checkout and with your bank.

In October 2025 OpenAI emailed Nigerian users that, from November 1, it would add 7.5% VAT to paid subscriptions under Section 10 of the VAT Act. Techpoint reported Plus at ₦31,500 a month, which becomes ₦33,862.50 with VAT. The naira figure can move with the exchange rate, so check what your own checkout shows.
| Plan | Reported price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Plus | ₦31,500 + 7.5% VAT = ₦33,862.50 | The plan most people need: higher limits and the advanced features for everyday work and study. |
| Go | ₦7,000 when it was introduced | A lighter, cheaper tier for occasional use. |
| Pro | $100 or $200 (US list prices) | Heavy and professional use only, with roughly 5x or 20x the usage of Plus. |
Plus is the one to aim for. Go is cheaper but built for lighter use, and the two Pro tiers are for heavy professional work. A $100 or $200 charge is also far more likely to trip a bank limit or fraud rule. If you think you need Pro, our $100 Pro tier guide explains who it is for.
Can You Pay With a Naira Card in 2026?
Often, yes. As foreign-exchange liquidity improved, the big banks raised the international limits on naira cards through 2026. These are the figures reported in September 2026 by Nairametrics and Legit.ng:
| Bank | International limit | Card |
|---|---|---|
| GTBank (GTCO) | $40,000 per quarter | Naira cards |
| Zenith Bank | $50,000 per year | Naira debit cards |
| FirstBank | $10,000 per quarter (POS and online) | Naira Mastercard |
| UBA | $10,000 online ($20,000 POS) | World USD card for POS |
| Stanbic IBTC | $8,000 per quarter | Mastercard naira debit |
| Access Bank | $2,000 to $3,000 per month | Depends on card tier |
Plus with VAT is about $21.50, far below every one of these limits. So the limit is rarely the problem now. What usually blocks the payment is a switch that is off, the wrong card scheme, or the bank's own fraud rules. Keep in mind that these limits have changed many times since 2023 and can change again, so check your bank's current figure before you rely on it.
Why ChatGPT Still Says "Payment Not Approved"
Before you switch cards, work through this list. Most failures from Nigeria come from one of these settings.
- Turn on international and online (card-not-present) transactions in your banking app, or ask your bank to. Many cards ship with them off.
- Use a Visa or Mastercard. Verve is Nigeria's domestic scheme and is often not usable at foreign online checkouts.
- Make sure the OTP or banking-app approval for 3D Secure arrives, and don't close or refresh the page while it is pending.
- Enter the billing address your bank has on file, type the card number by hand, and switch off any VPN.
- Check that the card holds enough for the VAT-inclusive price, plus a little room for exchange-rate movement on the day.
- Retry once after fixing the cause. Repeated attempts can trigger more fraud blocks.

Other Routes: Fintech Dollar Cards and App Stores
Fintech dollar cards. They filled the gap during the shortage, but the market has been unstable: several providers, including Barter by Flutterwave, suspended their dollar cards, and others changed fees or limits with little notice. If you use one, compare the card-creation fee, the monthly fee, the exchange rate and what happens if the card is deactivated before your renewal date.
Google Play and the App Store. Subscribing inside the ChatGPT app lets the store bill you, which can work when your card fails on the web. Store prices can differ from chatgpt.com, and you should never end up with two active subscriptions on different platforms.
A Privacy-First Card for ChatGPT
Nigerian banking runs on identity checks: BVN, NIN and phone-number links on every account, and in 2026 the CBN tightened those rules further, as our Yoruba guide to the BVN circular explains. SiraPay takes the opposite approach. It is a privacy-first virtual card: you can create one without a forced KYC process, with no ID upload and no face scan, and it runs as a standard Visa or Mastercard accepted at 150M+ merchants worldwide, by people in 100+ countries. It is funded with crypto such as USDT or a supported fiat top-up, so it doesn't depend on your bank's FX allocation or international switch.
For ChatGPT there is a dedicated card program on its own BIN, built for ChatGPT billing. Use code ChatGPT1 for 60% off that card. Every new account also gets a $2 welcome bonus, and the tasks to unlock it are shown in the app. See our page for ChatGPT and AI tool payments.
Getting started:
- Sign up on SiraPay and complete the privacy-first onboarding
- Fund your account with crypto (such as USDT) or a supported fiat top-up
- Create your card and choose the dedicated ChatGPT card
- Enter the card details on chatgpt.com's billing page and keep enough on the card for Plus with VAT, plus a small buffer
Two honest caveats. OpenAI and its payment processor decide which cards they accept, so no card can guarantee approval. And a card issued outside Nigeria doesn't change your own obligations under CBN foreign-exchange rules or Nigerian tax law. SiraPay is a spend-only card, not a way to receive money; see the pricing page for current card prices.
Quick Answers for Nigeria
How much is ChatGPT Plus in Nigeria?
It was reported at ₦31,500 a month, or ₦33,862.50 with the 7.5% VAT OpenAI added on November 1, 2025. Check your checkout for today's figure.
Will my GTBank or Zenith naira card work?
Often, yes. Their reported limits are far above the price of Plus, as long as international and online payments are switched on and the card is a Visa or Mastercard.
Can I pay with a Verve card?
Verve is mainly a domestic scheme and is often refused by foreign online checkouts, so a Visa or Mastercard is the safer choice.
Do I need Pro?
Probably not. Start with Plus and move up only if you keep hitting its limits.
Final Thoughts
Paying for ChatGPT Plus from Nigeria is easier in 2026 than it has been in years: the price is in naira and the banks have room to spare. If your card still fails, it is almost always a setting. Fix that first, and if your bank keeps getting in the way, use a card that doesn't depend on it.
