You choose Plus, enter your Sri Lankan card and ChatGPT says the payment was not approved. The card works at home, the balance is there, and the message gives no reason. That is common in Sri Lanka, and in almost every case the reason sits with the card's settings, not with your account.
This guide explains what ChatGPT charges in Sri Lanka, the five reasons local cards get declined, the local rules worth knowing before you pay abroad, and the fixes in the order that saves the most time. Details were checked on OpenAI's help pages on November 3, 2026.

Get Your Virtual Card →What ChatGPT Charges in Sri Lanka
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and ChatGPT Go, which launched in Sri Lanka in October 2025, is about $5. The bigger change is billing: OpenAI's multi-currency billing page now lists Sri Lankan rupees (LKR) among supported currencies for subscriptions bought on chatgpt.com. If checkout shows your price in rupees, your bank doesn't have to convert a dollar charge, which removes one common source of surprise fees. Cards are still the only payment method on the website in Sri Lanka; there is no local wallet option like UPI in India.
If you already pay in dollars, your plan keeps its currency. To switch to rupees, cancel and subscribe again once the paid period ends. Our comparison of ChatGPT Free, Go and Plus helps if you are deciding between Go and Plus.
Five Reasons Sri Lankan Cards Get Declined
| Cause | Sign and fix |
|---|---|
| Internet or overseas use is off | The card works in Sri Lanka, declined on chatgpt.comTurn on internet and international transactions in your bank app, or call the bank. |
| A low online limit | Small local payments work, the subscription failsRaise the online limit above the plan price, with a buffer for conversion and tax. |
| The OTP step didn't finish | No SMS code arrives, or the page times outCheck the phone number your bank has, switch off any VPN and finish without refreshing. |
| The balance is too tight | Declined as insufficient funds with money in the accountKeep more than the plan price on the card for the bank's rate and any tax. |
| Billing details don't match | Address or postal code rejectedUse the address and postal code your bank has on file for the card. |
Local Rules Worth Knowing Before You Pay Abroad
Personal payments only. The Central Bank's Department of Foreign Exchange says that cards issued in Sri Lanka can pay people outside the country only for current transactions of a personal nature. A personal ChatGPT subscription fits that, but the same rules list prohibited uses, including payments related to virtual currency.
The 18% digital services VAT. Sri Lanka planned an 18% VAT on digital services from foreign providers for October 2025. Reports say it was postponed twice, with 1 July 2026 as the latest start date. Whether ChatGPT adds it depends on the provider's registration, so check your invoice instead of guessing. Either way, keep a buffer above the list price on your card.
Five Checks Before You Try Again

Fixes, in the Order Worth Trying
- Check your bank app first. A blocked attempt usually shows there or arrives by SMS. If the bank declined it, the fix is on the bank's side; if there is no trace, the problem came earlier, at the address check or OTP.
- Switch on internet and international transactions. Many Sri Lankan debit cards ship with online or overseas use turned off. Most banks let you switch it on in the app; otherwise call the hotline or visit a branch.
- Raise the online limit and keep a buffer. Set the limit comfortably above the plan price. A $20 plan can cost noticeably more in rupees once the bank's card rate and any tax are added.
- Finish the OTP in one go. Allow pop-ups, keep the page open and enter the code without refreshing. A half-finished approval counts as a failure.
- Turn off the VPN and match your details. A Sri Lankan card, a foreign IP address and an address that doesn't match your bank's records together look like fraud to the payment processor.
- Retry once, then try another card. Repeated attempts can trigger further blocks. If a second card from a different bank fails the same way, see the section on cards that keep failing below.

What About Paying in the ChatGPT App?
On an iPhone or Android phone you can subscribe in the ChatGPT app instead. Then Apple or Google bills you in your local currency with the payment methods they support in Sri Lanka, and they manage the subscription, not OpenAI. Their price can differ from the web, and you must cancel in the store, not on chatgpt.com. Our guide to app payment failures covers the store side.
When Your Sri Lankan Cards Keep Failing
If you have worked through the fixes and a second card from another bank fails the same way, the card itself is the mismatch. A separate card for international subscriptions is the practical answer. SiraPay is a privacy-first Visa virtual card: you sign up with your email, with no forced KYC, no ID upload and no face scan, and it is accepted at 150M+ merchants. People use SiraPay in 100+ countries.
The ChatGPT Card is made for ChatGPT and other AI subscriptions, and code ChatGPT1 gives 60% off it. No SiraPay card renews automatically, so keep the plan price on the card before each billing date. For current prices, Check the app
Be clear about the limits. No card can guarantee that OpenAI approves a payment. SiraPay is funded with Binance Pay or crypto, and Sri Lanka's foreign exchange rules restrict card payments related to virtual currency, so check the rules that apply to you before you fund an account that way. Quick Answers
Can I pay for ChatGPT in Sri Lankan rupees?
OpenAI's billing help page lists LKR among the currencies it supports for subscriptions bought on chatgpt.com, so checkout may show your price in rupees. Cards are the payment method; Sri Lanka has no local wallet option on the website.
Is ChatGPT Go available in Sri Lanka?
Yes. ChatGPT Go launched in Sri Lanka in October 2025 at about $5 a month. It is the cheapest paid plan, with lower limits than Plus.
Is there VAT on ChatGPT in Sri Lanka?
An 18% VAT on digital services from foreign providers was set to start on 1 July 2026 after two postponements. Check your invoice to see whether VAT is added to your plan.
Why does my card work for shopping but not for ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a foreign merchant charging a recurring subscription. Many cards are set to block overseas or internet use, or have a low online limit, until you change it.
Final Thoughts
A failed ChatGPT payment in Sri Lanka is almost always fixable at the bank: switch on internet and international transactions, raise the online limit, finish the OTP and keep a buffer for the bank's rate and any tax. Rupee billing on chatgpt.com makes the amount easier to predict. Start with Plus at $20, or Go if your budget is tight, and check your invoice after the first payment.
