On Upwork you pay before you earn. Every proposal to a job post costs Connects, Upwork's virtual tokens, and new freelancers in Lagos, Lahore, Dhaka or Cairo often hit the same wall on day one: the local debit card that pays the electricity bill is declined at Upwork's checkout, and the first proposal never gets sent.
This guide is built on Upwork's own Help Center and its 2026 guide to Connects. It covers what Connects cost, the billing rule that catches most new freelancers, which payment methods Upwork accepts, the tax added in several countries, why local cards fail, and how to keep platform costs on a card of their own.

| What you buy | Cost (before tax) |
|---|---|
| 10 Connects (smallest bundle) | $1.50 |
| 100 Connects | $15.00 |
| Freelancer Plus membership | $19.99 a month, includes 100 Connects |
| Free monthly Connects (Basic plan) | 10 a month for some accounts |
| One proposal | Varies by job, shown on the job post |
The number of Connects a proposal needs changes from job to job. Upwork says it weighs project size, scope and market demand, and the number can change while the job is open. On top of the proposal you can bid extra Connects to boost it to the top of the client's list, or pay a weekly amount for the Availability Badge. Unused Connects roll over and expire one year after they are issued. Applying to a job a client invited you to costs nothing.
A quick budget: if the jobs you target ask for 12 Connects each, ten proposals cost 120 Connects, which is $18 before tax. Upwork may also give new freelancers a one-time bonus of 50 Connects after a first purchase or a Freelancer Plus subscription, and 30 Connects for each talent badge, but the first purchase still has to go through.
The Billing Rule That Stops New Freelancers
Upwork's Help Center is explicit: to buy Connects you need a verified billing method on your account, and this is required even if you plan to use your existing earnings to pay. When you buy, Upwork first checks your earnings balance. If it covers the whole amount, it uses it. If not, it charges the full amount to your billing method. It cannot split one payment between the two.
Once you are earning, you can set a reserve balance that stays in your account instead of being withdrawn, so future Connects come out of earnings. But the billing method still has to be there and verified. The only exception Upwork lists is Myanmar, where freelancers cannot add a billing method and use a reserve balance instead.
Which Payment Methods Upwork Accepts
- Credit or debit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Diners Club. Upwork says prepaid cards are also accepted.
- PayPal: a verified PayPal account works, but Upwork notes that a credit card must be added as a backup on the PayPal account if you use it for Connects or a membership.
- Venmo: available to freelancers who have it, which in practice means people in the US.
You add it under Account Settings > Billing & Payments. One small trap: the two address lines together can hold only 60 characters, so long addresses need standard abbreviations.
The Tax Added in Some Countries
In several countries Upwork has to charge local VAT or GST on Connects, memberships and its service fee. Upwork's own country pages list these rates (the Philippines figure comes from a Wise guide). Here is what a $15 bundle of 100 Connects becomes:
| Country | Tax on Connects | 100 Connects with tax |
|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | 7.5% VAT | $16.13 |
| Philippines | 12% VAT | $16.80 |
| Egypt | 14% VAT (unless VAT-registered) | $17.10 |
| India | 18% GST (unless you add a GSTIN) | $17.70 |
In Egypt and India the tax is not charged if you register and add the right tax IDs to your Upwork tax information. Upwork shows the estimated tax at checkout, so load your card for the total, not the list price.
Why Local Cards Fail at Upwork's Checkout
Upwork bills in US dollars from abroad, and many local cards are not set up for that. The reason differs by country:
Pakistan
PayPak cards are a domestic network, and international online payments are often switched off by default.
Pakistan card limits (Urdu) →Bangladesh
A dual-currency card needs a passport endorsement against the annual travel quota before it works abroad, then e-commerce must be enabled.
Bangladesh passport endorsement (Bengali) →Nigeria
Verve is a domestic scheme, and each bank sets its own foreign-currency limit on naira cards.
Virtual cards for Nigerian freelancers →Egypt
Buying from foreign sites while inside Egypt has its own bank limit, usually lower than the travel limit.
Egypt card limits (Arabic) →Freelancer Plus: Worth It, and the Renewal Trap
Upwork's 2026 guide lists Freelancer Plus at $19.99 a month with 100 Connects. Bought separately, 100 Connects cost $15, so you pay about $5 a month for the rest: instant job alerts, proposal and client insights, a 0% service fee on Direct Contracts, full access to Upwork's AI assistant and profile tools. It pays off once you send proposals every week. In your first month you get between 90 and 100 Connects, depending on when you upgrade.
The trap is the renewal. Upwork says that if a membership renewal charge fails for any reason, you are immediately downgraded to Freelancer Basic, and you have to fix the billing method and upgrade again. A card that is short on balance on renewal day costs you your plan in the middle of the month.
Keep Platform Costs on a Card of Their Own
The cleanest setup is a card that only pays for Upwork and the tools you work with. SiraPay is built for that. It is a privacy-first virtual card with no forced KYC: no ID upload and no face scan to open an account. It runs on Visa, works at 150M+ merchants and is used by freelancers and others in 100+ countries. The card holds only what you load onto it, so you can keep exactly one month of Connects, tax and membership on it and see at a glance whether the next renewal will go through. The card's price is shown in the app before you pay. Check the app
- Open a SiraPay account and complete the privacy-first onboarding
- Fund it with crypto (such as USDT) or a supported top-up method
- Create a card just for platform costs and load one month of Connects plus tax
- In Upwork, go to Account Settings > Billing & Payments and add the card as your billing method
Three honest caveats. Upwork and its payment processor approve each billing method, so no card can promise approval, even though Upwork lists prepaid cards as accepted. SiraPay is a spend-only card: it pays Upwork, but your client earnings still reach you through Upwork's own withdrawal methods. And keep every Connects invoice, because platform costs are business expenses in most tax systems. Our look at Upwork's 2026 fee changes explains why many freelancers now spread their work across platforms, and the fees and limits page lists every SiraPay charge.
Quick Answers
How much do Upwork Connects cost?
$0.15 each, sold in bundles of 10 or a custom amount, plus local tax in some countries.
Can I buy Connects with my Upwork earnings?
Yes, if your earnings balance covers the whole purchase. You still need a verified billing method on the account.
Do Connects expire?
Yes. Unused Connects roll over each month and expire one year after they are issued.
Do I get Connects back if I don't get the job?
Only in some cases: if the client cancels the project before a contract, or Upwork removes the post. Not if the client picks someone else, the job expires or you withdraw. Returned Connects come back as Connects, not cash.
Why was my card declined on Upwork?
Usually because international online payments are off on the card, the card network is domestic-only, or the balance does not cover the price plus tax.
Final Thoughts
Connects are cheap. Not being able to buy them is expensive, because every day without a proposal is a day without a client. Budget for the tax, keep a verified card on the account, put Upwork on a card of its own, and let your earnings take over the Connects bill once they start coming in.
