ChatGPT is available in Egypt, and plenty of people there want the $20 Plus plan. The trouble is the payment, not the product. The checkout expects an international Visa or Mastercard that can pay a foreign merchant in dollars, and that is exactly what many Egyptian cards are restricted from doing.
This guide is built around getting ChatGPT Plus working: why Egyptian cards get declined, which local routes are worth checking, how to fix a "payment was not approved" message, and where a virtual card issued outside the Egyptian banking system fits in. Go and Pro are covered briefly. Prices are US dollar list prices as of October 2026, so confirm them on chatgpt.com before you pay.

Get Your Virtual Card →Why Egyptian Cards Get Declined on ChatGPT
Debit cards. Since October 9, 2023, Egyptian pound debit cards at banks such as NBE have been limited to Egyptian pounds, which means they can't be used outside Egypt or in foreign currencies. ChatGPT is a foreign merchant billing in dollars, so a standard Egyptian debit card has no way through.
Credit cards. They still work internationally, but the limit is set by your bank and your card tier, and the schedules have been revised more than once since 2023. Entry-level cards are the tightest, and premium tiers get far more room. Check your own bank's current schedule rather than trusting a figure from a blog.
Switches and checks. Some banks keep international and online use switched off until you turn it on in the app or by calling, so the very first attempt can fail before limits even matter. On top of that, ChatGPT's checkout runs its own card checks. Cards that don't support 3D Secure, and cards from ranges the payment processor flags, are commonly reported to be declined even when the bank would have approved the charge.
| Card | Works for ChatGPT? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Egyptian pound debit card | No | Limited to Egyptian pounds and to Egypt since October 9, 2023, so it can't pay a foreign merchant in dollars. |
| Egyptian credit card | Sometimes | Depends on your bank, your card tier, your monthly international limit and whether international use is switched on. |
| Meeza card | No | Egypt's national scheme works only inside Egypt. |
| Virtual card issued outside Egypt | Usually | Processes as a standard international Visa or Mastercard. OpenAI still decides whether to accept it. |
ChatGPT Plus at $20: The Plan to Aim For
Plus is the plan most people actually want, and at $20 a month it is small enough to clear on a card with a modest balance. That makes it the right first target: get one $20 payment through, and you can renew it every month. For comparison, here are the paid steps, in US dollar list prices per month as reported in October 2026.
| Plan | Price per month | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Plus | $20 | The plan most people need: everyday work, study and creative use, with higher limits and advanced features. |
| Go | $8 | Lighter use at a lower price. |
| Pro | $100 or $200 | Heavy and professional use only, with roughly 5x or 20x the usage limits of Plus. Most people don't need it. |
Go costs less but is built for lighter use. The two Pro tiers are for heavy and professional work, and a single $100 or $200 charge can be too large for an entry-level card's international allowance. If you think you might need Pro, our $100 Pro tier guide explains who it is for. For most people the sensible order is Plus first, and a bigger plan later only if you hit its limits.
Local Routes: Fawry, Vodafone Cash, Meeza and Google Play
Egypt has strong local payment rails, but ChatGPT's web checkout is built around cards, so check which options it actually shows for your account. Here is what each local route can and can't do. We cover the same rails for streaming in our guide to paying for Netflix in Egypt.
| Route | What it is | Can it pay for ChatGPT? |
|---|---|---|
| Fawry | A cash and wallet network: you pay a reference code at an outlet or top up a mobile wallet. | Not a card, so there is no card number to enter at ChatGPT's checkout. |
| Vodafone Cash | A mobile wallet that, according to Vodafone, can generate virtual Visa cards from your balance. | Only through that virtual card, and only if OpenAI accepts it. Check the card's fee, validity and limits first. |
| Meeza | Egypt's national card scheme, which works only inside Egypt. | No. A domestic-only card can't pay a foreign merchant. |
| Google Play | Google lists Visa, Mastercard and Amex for Egypt, plus carrier billing through Vodafone and e&. | Possible on Android if the app subscription fits your carrier's limit. Prices in the store can differ from chatgpt.com, so compare before you commit. |
If you hold dollars in a bank account, a dollar-denominated card from your own bank is the simplest local option. Some banks offer them, so ask yours whether you qualify and what the limits are.
Fixing "Your Payment Was Not Approved" From Egypt
Before you change cards, work through this list. Most first-time failures come from settings, not from the money. For the full set of checks that apply in any country, see our guide to a ChatGPT payment that was not approved.
- Turn on international and online (card-not-present) payments in your bank app, or ask your bank to. Also ask it to release any fraud block on a charge to a foreign online merchant.
- Make sure 3D Secure works: your SMS code or banking-app approval has to arrive, and the approval screen shouldn't be closed early.
- Match your name and billing address exactly to what your bank has on file.
- Turn off any VPN or ad blocker, and type the card number by hand instead of using autofill.
- Don't keep retrying. Repeated declines can trigger further fraud blocks.
- If the same card still fails, treat it as a card problem (limit, settings or a flagged range) and try a different type of card instead of the same one again.
Paying With a Virtual Card Instead
A virtual card issued outside the Egyptian banking system isn't bound by the Central Bank's domestic foreign-currency rules the same way an Egyptian-issued debit or entry-tier credit card is. It processes as a standard international Visa or Mastercard, which is what ChatGPT's checkout expects. SiraPay's privacy-first onboarding asks for basic information only: no forced KYC and no ID upload. Up to five free virtual cards can be created from one account, and each card is funded separately. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, so load at least $20 for the first charge plus a small buffer in case the final amount differs slightly, for example with taxes, then top up before each renewal.
SiraPay also runs a separate ChatGPT card program on its own BIN, built specifically for ChatGPT billing. Use code ChatGPT1 for 60% off that card. Every new account also gets a $2 welcome bonus, and the tasks to unlock it are shown in the app. You can see the full picture on our page for ChatGPT and AI tool payments.
Getting started:
- Sign up on SiraPay and complete the privacy-first onboarding
- Fund your account with crypto or a supported fiat top-up
- Create your card (choose the dedicated ChatGPT card, or a general card if you prefer)
- Enter the card number, expiry, and CVV on chatgpt.com's billing page like any other Visa/Mastercard
- Keep at least $20 plus a small buffer on the card for ChatGPT Plus, and top up before each renewal date
Two honest caveats. OpenAI decides which cards it accepts, so acceptance is never guaranteed. And holding a card issued outside Egypt doesn't change your own obligations under local rules, so check what applies to you. This is also a spend-only card, not a way to receive money. See the pricing page for current card prices.
Quick Answers for Egypt
Is ChatGPT available in Egypt?
Yes. The difficulty is paying for it, not using it.
How much do I need to load for ChatGPT Plus?
Plus is $20 a month. Load at least $20 for the first charge plus a small buffer, then top up before each renewal so the next payment doesn't fail for lack of balance.
Do I need Pro?
Probably not. Pro ($100 or $200) is for heavy and professional use, so start with Plus and only move up if you keep hitting its limits.
Can I pay with Fawry or Vodafone Cash?
Not directly. Fawry is a cash and wallet network rather than a card. Vodafone says its wallet can generate a virtual Visa card, but whether OpenAI accepts it is OpenAI's decision, and a subscription needs a card that still works at the next renewal.
Will ChatGPT accept a SiraPay card?
SiraPay cards work at online checkouts that accept Visa or Mastercard. OpenAI still runs its own payment checks, so acceptance is ultimately its decision. If a payment is declined, contact OpenAI billing support or SiraPay support.
Do I need to pass KYC to get a SiraPay card?
SiraPay's onboarding doesn't force KYC or an ID upload. Your own bank's rules are separate and stay as they are.
Final Thoughts
A declined ChatGPT payment from Egypt is rarely about the money in the account. It is a mismatch between Egypt's card rules and how dollar subscriptions are billed. Work through the settings checklist first, aim for the $20 Plus plan, and if your card still can't get through, a virtual card issued outside that system removes the mismatch.
